Progress in science and technology has radically increased life expectancy across the world. The UK’s age structure is gradually becoming older, the number of people aged over 65 is projected by 23 per cent from 10.3 million in 2010 to 12.7 million in 2018. The ratio of working age people to elderly dependents is expected to go from 3.14 in 2010 to 2.61 in 2035.
This profound change means that our built environment needs to adapt to the needs of an ageing population.
