Eve Wilson – G4C Future Leader 2020

Constructing Excellence

From a young age I always had an interest in the built environment however was totally unaware of the scope of career options available. I started my career in property management, with a degree from Northumbria University and after a year in private practice knew I wanted to be more involved in the construction side. I was offered a position at Turner & Townsend on their Graduate Scheme in 2014 and began to get involved with G4C. With the support from T&T I was able to get fully involved with G4C becoming North East Co-Chair in 2016. I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with many regions and national G4C committees, getting involved in some really great initiatives from promotional videos, mentoring and speaking at conferences about the great work G4C does in driving the industry forward.

G4C gives a great platform to network and drive your career forwards, the great opportunities presented through G4C and Constructing Excellence gives a holistic approach to the construction industry which is rare to find elsewhere. By understanding all disciplines within the construction industry makes understanding your role and your peers so much easier. Through my involvement in G4C & role at T&T I have developed professionally and personally, being involved in great projects across the UK and Europe, working through a graduate role to a senior professional managing a team of my own.

Being involved in G4C nationally I see first-hand the remarkable talent we are lucky to have within the industry which made my win of Future Leader even more of a surprise. The benefit of the BRE training package will be invaluable in my role, having access to courses which I may have not previously considered further expanding my knowledge of the sector to become more rounded in my approach to my role.

My advice to anyone starting in the industry or young professionals would be to embrace every opportunity, the construction industry is an incredibly diverse place to work and by exploring various avenues while early on in your career can take you in directions you didn’t even know existed. The advancement of technology and digital will mean roles we have now will constantly adapt and change. By becoming an agile individual you will always have a place in construction.
