Red Kite View

Constructing Excellence

Red Kite View is a stunning modern mental health service facility in Leeds for young people aged 13 to 17 from across West Yorkshire.

The project objective was to address a national crisis for accommodation with a purpose-built facility to support the mental health of local children and young people who were previously travelling up to 130 miles from home to receive care. This was accomplished through the NHS ProCure22 framework, with a new Children and Young People’s Mental Health Service (CYPMHS) in-patient unit located on the St Mary’s Hospital site in Leeds, ensuring service users need never be more than 25 miles from home for treatment.

Red Kite View opened to service users in January 2022. It has 22 bedrooms with light, modern, and spacious facilities, and private en-suite bedrooms in a comfortable environment. The unit has a range of therapeutic areas, including multi-purpose activity rooms, education rooms, family visiting areas, courtyards, and green communal spaces for young people and staff.

Three Winning Facts:
  1. Red Kite View is a game-changer and sets the benchmark for children and young people’s mental health inpatient care. The project has successfully achieved Leeds and York Partnership NHS Trust’s vision of achieving a low carbon BREEAM Excellent and accessible facility for the local community.
  2. Red Kite View demonstrates the ingenuity of the construction industry and how a project full of unexpected challenges can be successfully delivered by finding solutions through true collaboration. The highly sustainable project was delivered safely, within budget to an exceptional quality despite a major redesign post start on site, COVID-19 and Brexit challenges.
  3. Outstanding social value outcomes have been delivered, despite the project being delivered during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, including a £44.6m injection within the local economy. The design and construction of Red Kite View generated 10 new jobs and supported 15 work placement days and 293 apprentice.
