EDF Energy are currently constructing two new nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point C in Somerset, requiring 5,600 people at peak.It was identified at concept stage that there was a need to provide early purpose built, high quality accommodation with minimal impact on the local community. Laing O’Rourke was selected as design and build contractor for the £125m Hinkley Workers Campus Project comprising the construction of two campuses, one at the Hinkley Point C site and one in Bridgwater, providing single living accommodation for 510 and 986 people respectively. Each site consisted of an amenity building(with restaurant ,bars and gym), sports pitches, roads, carparking, associated infrastructure, utilites and modular accommodation blocks. To facilitate early project delivery with minimum disruption an offsite accommodation solution was necessary. LOR engaged Caledonian Modular Ltd to design, manufacture and install 44 accommodation blocks, each comprising 34 rooms with ensuite shower, plant room and cleaners room and made up of 21 modules. A total of 924 modules were manufactured & installed in 19 months and the project safely completed in 21 months- on time, budget and exacting quality standards expected of hotel type accommodation.
