The UK housing and energy crisis means that the delivery of homes that are affordable to those on lower incomes is more important than ever.
As part of the council’s Affordable Housing Programme, North Tyneside Council set out with an ambitious vision to overturn a disused garage site on Falmouth Road into homes for over 55’s in an area of high housing demand.
The original 52 garages, built in the 1950s, were no longer in use and were attracting anti-social behaviour and fly tipping. By working in partnership with HUSK, the Council aimed to convert them into 9 high-quality two-bedroom bungalows with a low carbon footprint.
Using their Patented product, HUSK provided a turn-key solution, delivering sought after bungalows in the middle of an already thriving estate. Each home includes a kitchen, wet room, living and dining areas. The design also incorporates a parking area and individual front gardens.
The bungalows provide tenants with highly efficient fabric which contributes to lower energy bills and utilises Air Source Heat Pumps and Solar PV technologies.
The new homes have an EPC rating of band A and are compliant with Homes England and NDSS (National Described Space Standard) requirements.
Three Winning Facts:
- Bringing an undevelopable brownfield site into use.
- Providing a cost-effective affordable housing solution during a housing and energy crisis in the UK.
- Delivering nine much needed high quality 2-bedroom bungalows with a low carbon.
