Client’s Perspective on Integrated Project Insurance

Constructing Excellence

On 22nd May the Constructing Excellence Client’s Forum were given a unique insight into the client side of delivering an Integrated Project Insurance project.  Steve Johnson, the Executive Director of Estates and Capital Projects at Dudley College, provided a client perspective on the Dudley Advance II trial project of the Integrated Project Insurance Model (now called Insurance Backed Alliancing).  Steve considered the reasons behind choosing this model, what has worked really well, what hasn’t worked so well and what they would do differently on future projects.

The Constructing Excellence Client Members were delighted to hear such a positive experience coming from the Cabinet Office Trial Project that Constructing Excellence has long been a champion of.  In fact, Steve was so positive about the experience that he is using IPI / Insurance Backed Alliancing on his next project.

As befits a trial project the building itself is being used to train young people in the very latest construction techniques, including offsite, digital etc. and the procurement of the building is being incorporated into the curriculum.

There was an excellent discussion about how the use of IPI was able to get around many of the adversarial attitudes and behaviours that affect out industry with everyone working together to achieve a ‘best for project’ outcome.  However, having an informed and engaged client is critical to the success of the project.

The September meeting of the Client’s Forum will take virtually and look at the full range of trial projects.  Contact [email protected] for further information.
