Industrial Strategy and the productivity challenge in nuclear

Constructing Excellence

Constructing Excellence convened sixty people from across UK nuclear construction in late April to address the construction productivity challenge in the sector. The event was organised and led by our nuclear theme group chaired by Adrian Worker of CH2M and was supported by the ECITB, European Construction Institute, the Nuclear Industry Association, BIM4Nuclear, and kindly hosted by Burges Salmon.

Following inputs from the NIA on the policy context and a potential Sector Deal, major client/operators including EDF Hinckley Point C, Sellafield, and Horizon, as well as contractors’ viewpoints, the conference sat down to address five pairs of questions.

The output of the conference is a plan to establish working parties on some key areas, in partnership with other bodies and other theme groups of Constructing Excellence. It wont surprise anyone in Constructing Excellence that the underpinning foundation is how collaborative working can improve productivity.

  1. Influence the potential Sector Deal to ensure construction is addressed appropriately
  2. Develop a ‘productive construction factory’ model

Constructing Excellence

  1. Define and characterise productivity and KPIs measures for construction which drive improvement in the nuclear context

  1. Focus on how the design process can address high productivity of delivery including tools and models
  2. Explore how procurement impacts productivity in the sector and address the challenges.

For more information on the group, or to join a working session on 8th June to further the agenda please contact Don Ward or Adrian Worker.
