Transformation of redundant medical stores to create a state-of-the art Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) delivering life-saving health screening services at Florence Nightingale Community Hospital (FNCH) in Derby: University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Trust (the Trust) appointed Principal Contractor, Galliford Try (GT) to strip out the existing space to create a new purpose-built CDC equipped with the latest MRI, CT, X-ray and ultrasound diagnostic and screening equipment. The increased diagnostic capacity will improve local health outcomes by reducing waiting times for screening services and prioritising early intervention for the people of Derby and Derbyshire.
Works included demolition works, asbestos strip out, isolation and diversions of services and medical gases, partition works to create new clinical space, joinery, flooring and decoration.
Working in a live hospital environment presented unique challenges, primarily around maintaining business as usual for patients and staff. The Trust, GT and the supply chain worked collaboratively with hospital staff to manage the phasing of the works to prioritise patient care and maintain an uninterrupted healthcare service. The project was delivered to time and budget.
Three Winning Facts:
- 1. Excellent example of repurposing an existing underused hospital asset to improve access to vital health screening services for the people of Derby and the wider region to help identify disease earlier and reduce health inequalities.
- Use of collaborative practices to deliver the project to time and budget in a challenging operational hospital environment with no interruption to patient care.
- Client and end user delight with the quality of the end product which provides sustainable healthcare in a vibrant community hospital.
