Net Zero Heroes

Constructing Excellence

A forward-thinking, proactive group consisting of like-minded individuals who share one, unified goal, Seddon’s Net Zero Heroes focuses on reducing carbon produced by the business and supply chain to lead the way in the environmental construction sector. The pioneering group initiated in 2024, comprises of employees from across the business.

The NZH team invest both time and resource to produce successful outcomes for the company, leading by example. The group oversaw the approval of two new electric vans for business units, and an additional 12 EV charging ports (increasing total to 24 ports) to provide spaces for employees with electric cars.

Making up 5% of the organisation, the NZH does not solely focus on carbon reduction, but by overcoming challenges with proactive solutions across the business. The group encourages the whole business to attend lunch and learns about important topics such as fleet, encouraging people to complete learning modules and webinars through Supply Chain Sustainability School and inviting guests from other companies to present sustainable ideas in relation to green site set-up.

Nicola Hodkinson, co-owner of Seddon and Jake Dowling, Building Services Manager, are prominent members of the NZH group, and have been key contributors to ensure Seddon’s newly refurbished office is energy efficient. Following the refurbishment, they invited the Green Economy Sustainability Champions to discuss the steps Seddon have taken on our carbon neutral journey.

Three Winning Facts:
  1. The group consists of individuals with a mix of job roles, age and experience, providing a range of perspectives to create a seamless blend of wisdom. This allows the group to develop solutions to critical areas within the business, aiming to achieve one, unified goal; to reduce the carbon produced in our business and supply chain.
  2. Seddon’s fleet make up 68% of our total carbon emissions, which enabled the group to turn their attention to focus on reducing carbon emissions caused by our vehicles. Since the group was established, the NZHs have introduced a salary sacrifice scheme, providing access to an EV salary sacrifice option for all employees.
  3. Some members of the NZH had direct involvement in Seddon’s Bolton office refurbishment in 2024, implementing a digital twin to track MEP performance, occupancy levels and user habits, enabling the optimisation of building performance, and the minimisation of carbon emission. By implementing circular solutions, such as recycled materials and reusing retained materials, waste was prevented by extending the life cycle of these materials. By maximising passive heat control and retention, eliminating gas usage, and installing Solar PV, heat pumps and LED lighting, the refurbishment saw an overall reduction of 89.45 tonnes of carbon which is the equivalent to 75 vehicles off the road.
