Sheffield Road & Maltby Active Travel Scheme

Constructing Excellence

The £7.6m Sheffield Road and Maltby multi-site schemes created an active travel corridor to promote the use of buses and bicycles for short commutes with the aim of reducing dependency on cars as the primary mode of transport.

Procured through a 2-stage design and build mini competition under the YORCivil2 framework, the projects design and delivery targeted reducing crossing distances and vehicle speeds, with the aim of giving cyclists priority over vehicles using the network.

In the town centre, design measures were introduced to reduce traffic volumes in a bid to improve the local environment for residents and businesses coupled with public realm enhancements including modal paving and soft landscaping.

The new bus corridor at Maltby improved existing highway infrastructure with major highway alterations along the route and the introduction of new signalised junctions and pedestrian crossing arrangements. Interfaces across all sites included working directly outside commercial businesses, shops, schools and houses with regular liaison required as well as maintaining access at all times.
