Conservation and Regeneration Winner
Buxton Crescent Hotel and Thermal Spa was the winner of Conservation and Regeneration at the Constructing Excellence National Awards 2022. This project was innovative in its use of historic and modern renovation techniques and materials and is well-deserving of its award win.
Sitting in the centre of the historic town of Buxton, the Crescent was built between 1780-89 as the centrepiece of the Fifth Duke of Devonshire’s plans to establish a Georgian spa town in Buxton. However, the building was vacated in the 1990s and empty until Derbyshire County Council and High Peak Borough Council launched the Buxton Crescent Hotel and Thermal Spa project with the backing of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England. This building is now fully functional and a jewel in the crown of the local community.
