Upperton Road Student Accommodation is a purpose-built student residence located in the Bede Island area of Leicester. This is MAS architecture Ltd.’s fourth new build luxury high-end student accommodation scheme based in Leicester City for the same client. The scheme consisting of 46 self-contained studio apartments for student living, includes a gym, cinema room, and private study areas as well as indoor and outdoor communal areas.
The project was for the refurbishment of an existing block and the design and construction of two additional 3-4 storey blocks housing 46 studios, self-contained flats, and ancillary accommodation. The scheme is located within cartilage of a Grade 2 listed building and the design was developed with this in mind. Utilising MAS skills and expertise in old and new approach, a well-balanced contextual design approach was applied. Within the courtyard, through MAS bay window abstract, we were able to develop very interesting elevation treatments and avoid direct overlooking. This paved the way in having the blocks closer but just enough to provide sufficient natural light yet provide a very intimate space for students to enjoy and be proud to call it their new home during their stay.
This luxury student development is located within a short walking distance to the main campus centre of De Montfort University, it has good connections to Bede Park and Nelson Mandela Park to the south by foot along Regent Road. These connections allow easy access for the students to the various University departments and to local services and facilities within the area, bringing additional life and vitality to the location. The new build sits in line with its neighbouring buildings following the adjoining building line. A landscaped area has been created to the back of the proposed building, with a servicing area including an amenity space and cycle spaces and drop off and pick-up zone in the front. This area will also provide controlled secure access to the refuse stores.
Block A and in parts to Block C Roof there is a Green Roof. The benefits, not only to the environment are amazing as this type of roof helps to reduce carbon footprint through lowering building running costs and improves air quality.
It offers 46 self-contained, ultra-modern and smart studios and has various internal and external communal spaces. Each of the 46 studios has been designed with comfort and quality in mind, taking into account good on-site amenities. As shown on the floor plans, the site has an open courtyard towards the rear elevation. The site also boosts amenities such as a Gym located on the ground floor with shared laundry facilities, study pods and cinema room. As shown on the floor plans; it is visible that the layout for each room is designed to be spacious to allow for a flexible flow of movement. Each studio is designed to allow for a double size sofa in the room if needed with generous views towards all elevations. The bed space and study area are located nearest the window to allow natural light to be utilised during the day and there is plenty of storage combined with personal ensuite shower room facilities and a kitchenette. The communal facilities include a gym, cinema room, study pods, internal and external spaces as well as a laundry room and a large outdoor cycle store.
Upperton Rd Student Accommodation will provide a new level of much-needed contemporary student accommodation within Leicester city centre providing all the necessary facilities on site – thus creating a luxurious environment for students to thrive in.
