It was great to hear from the team behind the Constructing Excellence Sustainability award winner the Catalyst at our first Conversations on Net Zero on the 12th May 2021.
Collaboration – When we say team we mean TEAM, the importance of collaboration, early contractor involvement and engagement with a supply chain were critical to delivering the high levels of sustainability, indeed the team won the Integration & Collaborative Working Award at the Constructing Excellence North East Awards.
Digitalisation – Digital tools and effective use of the digital model allowed regular and more informed decision making and a better understanding of how decisions would impact across the project.
Cost & Schedule – This BREEAM Outstanding building was delivered 10% under budget and ahead of schedule. It demonstrates that sustainable doesn’t necessarily cost more!
Focus on outcomes – The team admit the project doesn’t include lots of innovative technologies. The focus on quality and doing things well is what delivered great project outcomes.
Aligned design & construction expertise – Engaging with a local supply chain at an early stage allowed them to bring their expertise to bear on the project. 70% by value was sourced within 50 miles and allowed better decision making. For example, the involvement of the steel fabricator at the right stage helped eliminate waste and saved 10% on the cost of the steel frame – delivering both financial and environmental sustainability.
A huge thank you to the team for getting our regular monthly Net Zero conversations off to such a good start! Keep an eye out for our future topics!
