The client, the University of Hertfordshire opened the doors to its new state-of-the-art School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science – Spectra – students and staff for the new 2024-2025 academic year.
A ‘one team’ approach has been implemented on this project and showcases that adopting a collaborative and integrated team approach is essential to navigating the complex requirements of a project.

- An inclusive client – taking them along for every step of the journey, the client’s number one priority was to ensure all stakeholders, including researchers and industry partners, were getting both what they wanted and needed in order to thrive. The building ensures all research and teaching areas are visible throughout, encouraging wider collaboration by ensuring students and researchers are always aware of what each other are doing.
- A collaborative client – the University of Hertfordshire set out their aspiration for a transparent approach for their project from the very beginning. As a client who understands construction, everything was brought to the table for discussion and their objective was how to resolve any issues and how they could support. They were very clear on their requirements, understanding that you can gain the most out of the procurement process by driving collaboration between consultants and contractors.
- A forward thinking client – academia and industry is evolving at such a rate, what is being taught in the classroom today might not be relevant tomorrow. By engaging with industry experts, the client proactively seeks intel on pipeline technologies and also, where to develop students in order to address current and future skills gaps. The technologies housed within the new facility are state-of-the-art and some of the highest spec equipment available. The building allowed the development of the CDIO spaces to support the new approach to teaching, establishing the university a sector leader in this field.
