The Ron Dearing University Technical College (UTC) had the ambitious goal of converting a derelict fire station located on the corner of their existing campus into a state-of-the-art education facility. The building had been empty since Humberside Fire Service relocated to a modern facility in 2017 and was targeted by antisocial behaviour and beginning to deteriorate.
Whilst the street frontage of the building presented a locally significant and attractive landmark, internally it was derelict and in need of major restoration. The site had been problematic to repurpose due to its specialist original usage and layout.
The results of the project for the college and the community have been positive, with the building sitting proudly within the conservation area and performing to modern standards. It is providing a valuable educational and historical link for students and the community who can trace the building’s evolution from a Victorian Police Station through to a 21st century education hub for the Humber renewables industry, attracting global investment from green industry players.
Three Winning Facts:
- Embodied Carbon saving of 45% of embodied carbon compared to building new.
- First-in-region to be connection-ready for Hull District Heat Network.
- Transition from derelict Victorian fire station to a hub for Humber Renewables.
