Sycamore at Northgate Park Hospital

Constructing Excellence

The client – Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear (CNTW) NHS Foundation Trust – is one of the largest mental health and disability trusts in England. It provides mental health, learning disability and neurological care for people across the North of England, as well as some national specialist services.

The project we are nominating the Trust for is Sycamore at Northgate Park Hospital, a new-build, medium secure mental health facility providing inpatient accommodation for 72 male patients with a range of forensic mental health needs, part of Cohort 1 of the NHS New Hospital Programme. Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM) was the Main Contractor, the designer was Medical Architecture, NTW Solutions were the Trust’s project managers for the scheme.

Three Winning Facts:
  1. Despite the challenges posed by Brexit, Covid, hyperinflation resulting from the war in Ukraine, and general supply and demand issues, the fantastic team spirit engendered by the Trust on the project ultimately led to its successful delivery, exactly to specified requirements and service users’ needs, in an exemplar of true collaborative behaviour. The Trust worked with all stakeholders, consultants and supply chain partners in the true spirit of partnership – putting partnering at the heart of everything they did.
  2. Sycamore represented the end of 20 years of capital programme works for the Trust, and was the culmination of years of best practice transfer and lessons learnt.
  3. There was continuity from the Trust’s team at every level from Service Director to individual project delivery team members throughout the full project lifecycle, from concept design to final handover.
