Stockport Interchange for Transport for Greater Manchester, delivered by Willmott Dixon

Constructing Excellence

The largest development of an ongoing £1 billion step-change in urban development, the £140m Stockport Interchange project creates a flourishing gateway to the region and is at the heart of the Bee Network, Greater Manchester’s new integrated London-style transport system. Willmott Dixon was entrusted by Transport for Greater Manchester to create a mixed-use development including a transport hub, a two-acre town centre park and 196 new homes in a 15-storey building.

Sustainable design is at the heart of the project which eliminated embodied carbon equivalent to approximately 25 years of operational energy use. The integration of the two-acre Viaduct Park above the interchange not only enhances green space but also fosters community engagement and well-being featuring play equipment and a
community space.

Active travel interventions include a cycling and walking ‘bridgescape’ link to the town’s famous railway station, whilst a helical ramp over sails the River Mersey to connect with the town centre and Trans Pennine Trail.

The incorporation of a ‘blue-roof’ drainage system demonstrates a proactive approach to water management, mitigating environmental impact and enhancing resilience to climate change. The interchange leaves a legacy of investment, skills and opportunities, creating 166 new jobs.
