A grade II listed building, Brackenhurst Hall stands on the east side of Nottingham Road, outside Southwell. It was developed as a minor manor house for a series of local families before becoming an agricultural college post-war. The building then suffered some insensitive extensions and internal alterations and had not been upgraded for many decades.
Beginning in 2021, NTU restored and stabilised the exterior of the Hall, then in 2023, refurbished its interior for modern University use. The external works included:
- Rectification of localised subsidence
- Re-pointing to brickwork
- Renewal of roof and leadwork
- Refurbishment of windows and doors
The internal works included:
- New stair to replace corroded metal stair
- Renewal of M&E services throughout.
- Renewal of IT infrastructure and capabilities
- Replacement of rotten floor joists
- Extensive plaster repairs and refurbishment and renewal moulded plaster details
- Update of doors for better fire protection and improvements to fire egress through the introduction of an additional fire egress route
- Restoration of parquet and terrazzo flooring where uncovered
- Strip of C20th flooring, and replacement with sensitive new flooring
- Redecoration throughout, using historic colour research
Three Winning Facts:
- An underused and worn-out listed building has been brought back into University use for colleagues and students
- The exterior has been restored to its former glory
- The interior has been restored, improved and given a new lease of life, with a magnificent new stair
