Prince Charles Hospital Refurbishment

Constructing Excellence

The redevelopment of Prince Charles Hospital (PCH) combines retrofit, refurbishment, and new construction within a live acute hospital site, presenting a unique challenge. Close consultation and collaboration with the entire team have been paramount to ensure minimal disruption.

Led by Tilbury Douglas, the original builders of the hospital in 1972, this nine-year, multi-phased programme has transformed PCH into a modern, state-of-the-art facility, significantly enhancing patient and staff experience.

The project includes new departments, atriums, two main-entrances, hydrotherapy pools, new plant-rooms, and updating car parks, all while the hospital remained fully-operational with no services decanted off-site and with and average of 150 people working on site daily. PCH was one of the most contaminated buildings in Wales and the UK’s largest live asbestos removal contract. Asbestos removal and remediation were essential to facilitate the major expansion, refurbishment, and upgrading works, ensuring the building meets the latest fire, health, and safety standards.

Three Winning Facts:
  1. Sustainability: Implementing energy-efficient systems and optimising building operations is predicted to achieve a 20% reduction in energy consumption, annual cost savings of £50,000, and a reduction in carbon emissions by approximately 150 metric tons per year.
  2. Resource: An experienced team with an average of 150 people on-site daily, with more than a million recorded hours worked on the scheme.
  3. Impact: The project created 102 jobs, donated 926 staff hours to educational activities, and trained 33 apprentices, contributing to local employment, education, and skills development.
