M&Y Maintenance and Construction is an established contractor with over 40 years’ experience, trusted by a continually growing client base including Regenda Homes, Redwing, Wigan Council, The Sovini Group, Prima Group, Weaver Vale Housing Trust, and Cheshire East Council.
As one of the North West’s largest maintenance and construction companies and as part of the ever-growing regeneration organisation, The Regenda Group, our vision is to shape the future and transform communities and lives. As part of our place within the Group structure, the M&Y Health and Safety team manages all aspects of the health, safety and wellbeing of around 650 colleagues across nine subsidiary companies.
The Regenda Group spans multiple sectors and as such, there are an array of rules and regulations that must be enforced by the Health and Safety team. Making sure the people who work, visit, and use our sites return home safely every day is our number one priority and the guiding principle behind each decision we take.
At M&Y, we invest heavily in our health and safety training and culture and work tirelessly to ensure that incidents do not happen. Mandatory training requirements for all staff includes a full day induction, environmental awareness, customer service and safeguarding. We know and understand that to promote a safe working environment, we must work closely with our workers. That is why at M&Y, we carry out staff consultation programmes whenever implementing anything new, whether a complex programme installation or procuring new tools.
For safety to remain front and centre, we must focus on constantly learning and growing, and providing opportunities for everyone to do the same. Our Health and Safety team consistently looks for ways to engage with staff to find out what works and what does not. In our most recent staff survey (for all 650 Regenda Group colleagues), 98% of employees said they felt safe at work.
We have invested in our SHE health and safety software, which ensures a tailored training plan is adhered to for every individual to fulfil their role and duties. SHE produces monthly reports ensuring all training expiry dates are complied with and sends alerts out to managers when their staff’s training is due to expire to ensure that qualifications/training requirements are maintained. The system has completely transformed how we perform risk assessments, track accidents and manage safeguarding.
At M&Y and the wider Regenda Group, we take huge pride in being the first organisation in the UK to partner with national mental health charity, Chasing the Stigma, to deliver its Ambassadors of Hope mental health training programme to all of our staff. Ambassadors of Hope is a training programme, giving staff a better understanding of mental health and advice on providing signposting to those who need help. The training has provided all colleagues with a baseline understanding of the signs, symptoms and causes of mental ill-health. Our staff provided overwhelmingly positive feedback about the training, and we have now incorporated the programme into our corporate induction process for all new starters.
