Morlais

Constructing Excellence

Jones Bros were awarded a contract in March 2022 to deliver Morlais, a Tidal Energy Scheme by our Client Morlais Menter Môn Ltd. (MMMLtd) An idea of a Tidal Energy Scheme was initiated by MMMLtd back in 2014 when the Crown Estate wanted to support energy projects in the sea to give them a future income stream. Our brief was to complete the vision of our Client making it reality.

The tidal energy scheme will deliver 240MW of renewable power into the UK electricity grid. Our works involved the construction of a 10,000 m2 Landfall substation at sea fall end, and a grid connection substation at the Parc Cybi end. Connecting the two is 6.5km of trefoil ducting and cabling installed in the carriageway.

The Client was conscious of timescales of the funding stream to comply with Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) rules and thus one of the main drivers was completion by end of 2023. As a team we achieved completion in early December 2023.

From the start, we engaged with the local community and businesses that would be affected by the scheme. We employed a full time Public Liaison Manager and along with the Project Manager we were out there knocking on doors and discussing the scheme, ensuring they were aware of the upcoming works and the likely disruption and duration.

Three Winning Facts:
  1. A Team approach to engaging with local community, stakeholders and subsequent communication.
  2. Collaborative working: delivered with mutual trust and co-operation between Client and Contractor.
  3. Use of the local resources and supply chain to deliver 80% of project.
