For over 50 years, MGL Group has provided services to reshape the built environment. Our core services include civil engineering, road surfacing, asphalt production, asbestos removal, demolition, earthworks and property development with a comprehensive range of business units. Our focus on quality ensures cost-effective solutions which deliver the transformational and sustainable change our communities need.
One of the most significant factors impacting our carbon footprint is the asphalt materials required for the surfacing works we undertake. The embodied carbon in the aggregate and bitumen comprises a substantial percentage of the total. Adopting a circular economy approach and enhancing resource efficiency enables us to deliver on these stretching targets, progress towards ending plastic waste and achieving Net Zero.
We use the Environment Agency’s Quality Protocol-Aggregates from inert waste to demonstrate that inert waste material has been manufactured into a product. The purpose of the quality protocol is to provide a uniform control process from which we can reasonably state and demonstrate that our product has been fully recovered and is no longer a waste. It also provides clients with a quality-managed product to common aggregate standards, increasing confidence in performance.
Innovation underpins our approach; we focus on recycling and reducing our environmental footprint. For example, through our business, Tynedale Roadstone, we develop and self-deliver a range of innovative asphalt solutions. We recycle locally sourced, end-of-use plastic and tyre waste which we then put into our asphalt products and lay on local road networks through our surfacing division, part of Rainton Construction. Specialising in groundworks, civil engineering and surfacing, we have completed significant infrastructure schemes throughout the North East for Local Authorities, National Highways, Tier 1 contractors and developers.
Our Plastipave® products provide a long-term, cost-effective, sustainable asphalt solution for end-of-use waste streams. With each km of road laid using our products, we use up the equivalent weight of 114,615 plastic bags or 85,358 plastic milk cartons.
Three Winning Facts:
- Diversion from landfill- Each 20-tonne delivery of asphalt for surfacing projects includes approximately 1,272 single-use carrier bags and the crumb from 51 vehicle tyres.
- Carbon reduction- in 2022 our production plants in Newcastle and North Yorkshire manufactured 101,765.00 tonnes of Plastipave, saving over 534.72 tonnes of CO2.
- Collaborative working and stakeholder engagement- we have contributed towards the net-zero ambitions of North East Local Authorities as part of the NEPO Framework, in turn providing cost savings that can be reinvested in other innovations.
