The project at the Fishwick Estate in Preston, delivered through a partnership between Seddon Housing Partnerships and National Energy Action, saw the creation of a unique solution to address failed External Wall Insulation (EWI) works while simultaneously addressing significant damp and mould issues in traditional terraced Victorian homes.
Previously installed EWI was causing significant water ingress leading to damp and mould, deepening the impact of fuel poverty. The project was one of the first of its kind in bringing forward a funded solution to previous failed works delivered through the Green Deal initiative, supporting residents in improving their homes through issues that were of no fault of their own. The works included on the project included the following:
- Removal and replacement of existing external wall insulation
- Adjustment of fascia, eaves and verges to provide weathering for external wall insulation
- Removal of existing cavity wall insulation
- Surveying, treating and addressing damp related issues to ceilings, walls and timberwork.
- Installation of whole house demand control ventilation system
- Re-fix of windows in correct position and re-installation and repair of windowsills to avoid water ingress.
- Making good to finishes and decorate affected areas.
Three Winning Facts:
- The energy efficiency of the homes has significantly improved, with u value ratings of 0.30W/m2K, up from 2.0W/m, bringing about a huge reduction in energy bills.
- Through the works, the health and wellbeing of residents has increased immeasurably by addressing significant health risks in damp and mould.
- House values have increased as a result of improving the condition of the homes, creating a direct financial benefit.
