Embedding Digital

Constructing Excellence
Embedding Digital – how do we ensure digital solutions are properly implemented to deliver their intended outcomes across projects and organisations?
The CE Digital Steering Committee meeting (5 December 2025) focused on revitalising the digital theme group within Constructing Excellence, which had lost momentum over the past year. The chair emphasised the continued need for a structured approach to digital transformation in construction, particularly given rapid advancements in AI and the associated ethical and governance challenges. Future initiatives were linked to Constructing Excellence’s five strategic pillars: empowering members, driving engagement and influence, delivering insights and inspiration, nurturing future talent, and strengthening governance.

Key discussion points:

1. Digital Adoption and Value

Members agreed that digital is already embedded in construction processes, but the challenge lies in maximising adoption and demonstrating tangible benefits. One example shared was an incremental approach—small, benefit-driven changes aligned to business problems—supported by a benefits framework to measure ROI.

2. AI and Ethics

Concerns were raised about responsible AI use, data verification, and psychological safety for users. The group stressed digital equity, inclusivity, and accessibility, while noting the need for clear ethical guidelines and governance.

3. Digital Twins and Standards

Digital twins were identified as a major opportunity, with calls for operational use cases and governance improvements. Suggestions included developing standards to define what constitutes a true digital twin, enabling consistent measurement of benefits.

4. Collaboration and Language

The importance of simplifying terminology to avoid alienating non-technical stakeholders was highlighted. The group agreed that language and framing matter, proposing a shift from “digital transformation” to “digital improvement” and positioning digital as an enabler rather than an isolated goal.

5. Security and Risk

The importance of data integrity and cybersecurity was emphasised, with warnings against complacency as digital systems proliferate. The group discussed revisiting guidance from national security authorities to ensure robust controls.

6. Future Focus and Engagement

Members proposed practical steps: showcasing real-world case studies (e.g., major infrastructure projects), aligning with industry initiatives, and consolidating fragmented efforts around data standards. The first event for ‘Embedding Digital’ is scheduled for 26 February 2026, featuring a presentation on digital twins.

Overall theme

We aim  to reposition digital as a driver of collaboration, efficiency, and cultural change—focusing on value, inclusivity, security, and governance rather than technology for its own sake. The group will curate a program of events and resources to share best practices and inspire adoption across the industry.
