Deloitte LLP is a professional services firm with 18,000 colleagues around the UK and Switzerland. Their purpose is “to make an impact that matters” so when the once-in-a-decade opportunity arose to move into a new 280,000ft2 head office, they wanted to deliver a workplace that would raise the bar by truly benefiting people and planet.
Across 15 floors there were 2,000 core and 1,500 flexible working positions to be provided for 5,500 agile colleagues; we needed to consolidate all the client spaces across the campus within a range of formal, informal and innovative collaboration spaces; provide cafés, restaurants and a fine-dining suite; and offer a mix of amenity and wellness spaces for their people. Spaces were to be connected through 13 newly created accommodation stairs and 2 pedestrian bridges that would encourage movement and collaboration through and between the campus; and of course the project needed to deliver on world-leading sustainability aspirations.
Tasking the design and delivery teams to deliver a BREEAM Outstanding fit-out would have been challenging on its own, but additionally including a requirement for WELL Gold – an assessment scheme none of us had worked through before; with not easily recognizable requirements in the early versions; and a lack of certainty the certifications were compatible – made the whole project challenging. In addition, sustainability was one of many internal workstreams, all of which had their own priorities for 1NSS so another challenge was the need to balance everyone’s requirements.
