David Williams

Constructing Excellence

David falls firmly into the category of over performers who sit within the percentile of young staff exceeding expectations in their current job role within the construction industry.

David has been involved in managing different elements of the construction process for a number of years. This includes tender, ECI, pre-construction and design co-ordination. Most recently operational management of various construction projects across the North East of England have taken precedence, allowing David’s natural talent for management to come to the fore.

Over the past year David has blended the conclusion of his participation in the BB graduate scheme with the opportunity to implement his learning and experience supporting the PM on the ground breaking Gateshead District Energy Scheme project.

The project is being delivered to BIM Level 2 and Autodesk BIM 360 field have been embraced by the entire team and Customer as a project management tool. This is ground-breaking technology for the industry and has proved invaluable to the efficient delivery of the project.

Since the departure of the PM from the business in September 2016 David has assumed responsibility for bringing the £8.3m scheme to conclusion. He has done this with exceptional skill and confidence, leading the project to successful completion with a quiet but strong and thorough professionalism – producing another major reason for his nomination for this award.

An easy and open style of management means respect comes naturally from those around him, operatives, subcontractors and Client with his efficient and thoughtful communication. His commercial understanding is developing well and he clearly recognises the impact of the decisions he makes.

He employs the best tools at his disposal, including his developed understanding of digital tools including BIM, Field 360, and short interval control; aligning them with day-to-day Health and Safety management to drive production and commitment on site.  David has involved himself in this technology, seeking out opportunities to learn from his peers and push his development. His proactive attitude has been a driving force in delivering success.

David sets himself very high standards to achieve success; this is shown both in his work and personal life. David undertook a Distant Learning Masters (MSc) in Construction Project Management with Northumbria University; graduating and achieving a distinction in July 2016. This was supported by Balfour Beatty Regional North East and David completed this independently at nights/weekends while carrying out normal project management duties. Also during this time he was working towards his professional accreditation, becoming a chartered member of the CIOB in August 2016.
