Bassetlaw Emergency Department

Constructing Excellence

DBTH is an acute NHS Trust, serving a population of 440,000+ across North Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, and the surrounding areas. It has three hospital sites in Doncaster, Bassetlaw and Mexborough, and employs 7000+ staff.

IHP has been DBTH’s Principal Supply Chain Partner, since 2015, appointed via the ProCure Frameworks to advise and support the Trust through its evolving programme of estates improvement works. Most recently, IHP and DBTH collaborated to deliver the design and construction of a new Emergency Department at Bassetlaw Hospital.

This transformational project comprises a single-story new-build, with roof top plant, and refurbishment of an existing two-storey building; together these house a brand-new Emergency Department (ED), Acute Medical Unit (AMU), and a Children’s Assessment Unit (CAU). A new substation was installed to ensure resilience and an enabling scheme to remove RAAC and install replacement roof to the adjacent building was also delivered concurrently, making it the first NHS Trust to remove all RAAC from its estate.

The project has delivered significant operational benefits for DBTH and its community, including:

  • Enhanced environment for patients, staff and visitors, including access to green space
  • Improved patient flow and operational efficiencies
  • Reduced waiting times: 33% more patients being seen within 15 minutes of arrival and average wait for initial treatment is down to 25 minutes
  • Enabled twice as many ambulance patients to be seen by a senior clinician within 15 minutes
  • Facilitated 24-hour paediatric care and overnight stays
  • Improved traffic flow, enabling ambulances to reach the ED quicker.
Three Winning Facts:
  1. Through a collaborative design and build project, the team have delivered a well-considered facility that seamlessly brings all urgent care services together under one roof, creating an environment that supports connectivity and communication, and where patients are quickly guided to the appropriate care.
  2. Through careful implementation of a project social value plan, together, the project team have delivered an impressive social legacy, having created some £9.5m* social return on investment, through local employment, community engagement and education activities. *Figure calculated using the TOMs Framework method
  3. Twice, a 100% score was awarded by the Considerate Constructors Scheme monitor – during their independent site audit, to assess IHP’s application of its three key Code of Considerate Practice themes of Respecting the Community, Protecting the Environment, and Valuing the Workforce.
