In 2006, Bam Construction Midlands appointed a ‘Learning Resources Coordinator’ to work on the £64M Bromsgrove Schools PFI project to link the work on site to the schools we were constructing with the national curriculum. ‘Making construction a learning opportunity’ was born, something the Local Authority were keen to promote. The position of LRC developed the way we worked with schools and the local communities in which they were located. We delivered specialist training to 78 year 10 students as part of the BTEC level 2 construction and the built environment diploma, who were at risk of being excluded from their schools or who were struggling with learning in a classroom environment. We also developed and worked in partnership with other community groups and education establishments and set up the RHS Spring Festival education competition which has had 101 education entries in the last 10 years and over 5,000 participants. This role demonstrated a unique approach to CSR and as a result of the initial work in the Midlands, Bam now employs a Community coordinator in each region to support the strategic aim of working with local communities with our ‘Enhancing Lives’ challenge to support over a million people by the year 2020.
