Material Evolution’s Innovative Approach to Ultra-Low Carbon Cement

Constructing Excellence

Material Evolution is reducing carbon emissions in the cement and concrete industries – responsible for 8% of all global emissions.

Today, our team is delivering cement with 85% less CO2 emissions than traditional OPC binders. We have achieved this major reduction by using industrial byproducts as feedstocks and through our patented alkali fusion process, which uses no heat to produce our MevoCem. Our R&D team uses AI & ML technology to accelerate our speed of innovation. Tomorrow, we will deliver cement with negative carbon emissions on an even larger scale, as we aim to save one gigatonne of CO2 by 2040.

In October 2024, we launched the UK’s largest ultra-low carbon cement factory at scale in Wrexham, which can produce 120,000 tonnes of our MevoCem annually. We delivered the plant on-time and on-budget in just 8 months, and it is co-located onsite with CCP, a subsidiary of strategic investor SigmaRoc and producer of concrete blocks that can use our cement directly – thereby reducing transport emissions. We funded this groundbreaking first-of-a-kind (FOAK) facility through our £15M Series A fundraise and grants from InnovateUK.  By working with government, trade bodies, sustainability experts and those who specify cement and concrete products, we have the power to create significant change as a collective, not only for the industry, but for our environment.

Three Winning Facts:
  1. We aim to save one gigaton of CO2 by 2040 by delivering cement with negative carbon emissions.
  2. We launched the UK’s first ultra-low carbon cement factory at scale in just eight months in Wrexham.
  3. We fundraised a total of £25M from a mix of equity and grants to deliver ultra-low carbon cement.
