Health and Safety Strategy – Service Avoidance Focus

Constructing Excellence

We care about our people getting home safe and well at the end of the working day, and have a vision for achieving ZERO injuries and PREVENTING occupational ill-health. One of the ways we will achieve this is by targeting major issues for our industry, the hazards that cause serious or even fatal injuries every year. One such issue on which we have developed an innovative approach is service strikes: quite simply too many services get hit around the country every day causing massive disruption, incurring significant costs and shattering lives. As part of our Health & Safety Strategy we have embarked on a major campaign with the aim of achieving ZERO service strikes on our sites.

Our refreshed Strategy was rolled-out to every employee in November 2017, at venues across the country, including our Head Office in Skipton. The Strategy provides a toolkit to enable everyone to be a safety leader, it includes; standards, guidance, visuals, targets, goals, responsibilities, and ways of sharing learning. The refreshed Strategy has re-engaged our employees and the supply chain, without this engagement, we will not improve performance and achieve our vision.

The Strategy is built around six elements (Strategy-Communication-Targets-Compliance-Leadership-Learning). Our aim is to create an interdependent safety culture where we all ‘look out for our mates’ – this makes everyone at JN Bentley a ‘Safety Leader’. Every single employee has signed up to a set of Personal Safety Responsibilities (PSRs), specific to their role, from General Construction Operative to Director.
