2022 Award Winner Case Study: HMP Five Wells

Constructing Excellence

Building Project of the Year Winner

HMP Five Wells won the Building Project of the Year Award at the Constructing Excellence National Awards 2022. This project encapsulates innovation at its finest through the use of cutting-edge technologies such as AR to test virtual inductions and method statements, virtual reality to review resident flows and room layouts, digital design tools to achieve a high level of detail to inform strategy for precast moulds, installation programme, lifting strategies and integration of other components. These innovative approaches enabled collaboration, lowered environmental impact, high levels of Health and Safety, continued construction through the COVID-19 pandemic and the maximisation of offsite manufacturing.

One of the key winning features of the HMP Five Wells project is the use of offsite manufacturing alongside the 80% standardised design. This design is the first of its kind and will be used to deliver a further five new prisons in the coming years, a feat enabled through a repeatable design optimised for manufacture and assembly. Their innovative use of offsite manufacturing saved 30% in on-site resource and resulted in assembly that was 22% faster than traditional construction.

We’re pleased to showcase this winning project as a model example of embracing new technology, methods of construction and collaborative working. To read the full case study about HMP Five Wells, Building Project of the Year 2022, click the image.
