SUMMARY:Innovation Exchange
DESCRIPTION:The built environment and construction industry face constant external and internal challenges that require a systemic approach to innovation to turn these challenges into opportunity. Innovation is vital to driving continuous improvement and to achieve our net zero ambitions\, although it often suffers from hype with a lot of noise and a lack of implementation. \nJoin us on 3rd March for a session on Zero-carbon construction using Optoppen and changes and behaviour in the R&D claims landscape. \n  \n\nZero-carbon construction using Optoppen\n\n“A new free\, open access digital tool has been developed as part of the Optoppen project – Exploring the use of lightweight roof extensions using timber and other bio-materials. \n Hosted on a web platform that also showcases the opportunities and successes of this form of construction\, the tool enables property owners and asset managers to get a feel for the structural capacity of their buildings for themselves\, unlocking potential for their buildings and portfolio. \n Optoppen increases the floor area in existing buildings\, contributing to urban decarbonisation targets\, densification strategies and more-efficient use of existing infrastructure. Combining refurbishment and the use of timber is a very low embodied carbon solution using today’s technologies and demonstrates the circular economy in action\, ticking many sustainability boxes. \n Reusing existing building frames\, and adapting and extending existing building stock\, is also a logical response to the challenges the construction industry faces in meeting climate targets. Lightweight vertical extensions increase the amount of additional floor area achievable using the capacity of existing foundations and structure. \n The talk will discuss the innovative nature of the tool\, the process that was undertaken to develop it and will include a live demonstration of the tool in action. Case studies will be shared of Optoppen projects\, including projects throughout Europe and beyond!” \n  \n\nUK – R&D claims landscape – changes and behaviour\n\nJoin us for an insightful talk on the latest changes to the UK Research and Development (R&D) claim scheme\, designed to keep you ahead in the ever-evolving landscape of tax reliefs. This session will delve into the significant reforms introduced\, including the new Merged Scheme and HMRC’s enhanced approach to enquiries and checks. \n The Merged Scheme\, effective from April 2024\, combines the previous R&D Expenditure Credit (RDEC) and the SME R&D relief into a single\, streamlined system. This change aims to simplify the claiming process\, making it more accessible and efficient for businesses of all sizes. Under the Merged Scheme\, companies can now claim a 20% R&D expenditure credit\, with enhanced support for loss-making SMEs through the Enhanced R&D Intensive Support (ERIS)\, allowing them to deduct up to 186% of their qualifying costs. \n In addition to these structural changes\, HMRC has intensified its focus on compliance to tackle abuse and ensure the integrity of the R&D tax relief system. This includes mandatory digital submissions for all claims\, accompanied by detailed additional information forms. HMRC has also introduced a mandatory random enquiry programme (MREP) to better understand and address non-compliance. These measures are designed to protect taxpayer money while ensuring that legitimate claimants can continue to benefit from the reliefs. \n Don’t miss this opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of these pivotal changes and how they could impact your business. Whether you’re a seasoned R&D claimant or new to the process\, this talk will provide valuable insights and practical advice to navigate the new landscape effectively. \n  \nThis event provides Constructing Excellence National members with CPD in partnership with BRE Academy.

SUMMARY:Trusted and Responsible Data and Artificial Intelligence in Construction- Latest Developments
DESCRIPTION:On 12th March the CE Digital Group will be taking part in a workshop on the latest developments in ‘Trusted and Responsible Data and Artificial Intelligence in Construction’.\nArtificial Intelligence is everywhere at the moment! Leaving organisations in the construction sector unsure of where to invest their time and effort to ensure their AI strategy delivers genuine impact and limit the potential risks. Constructing Excellence has been collaborating with colleagues at BRE on an Innovate UK-funded project TRAMS Enterprise\, which aims to help overcome this challenge. \nThe TRAMS-Enterprise project has developed a unified\, sector-wide framework for managing trusted and responsible data\, artificial intelligence (AI)\, and machine learning (ML) solutions for the construction industry. The initiative leveraged the work being undertaken in this area in the finance sector\, expertise and needs of leading contractors and industry bodies to address challenges hindering the development\, adoption\, and diffusion of AI/ML solutions in on-site construction. \nKey Project Deliverables: \n\nA functional and widely adopted framework\, with future models explored for broader industry use.\nProof-of-concept AI-based solutions developed and demonstrated by the participating SMEs within the TRAMS-Enterprise framework.\n\nThe workshop will address issues and data sharing tools for managing trusted and responsible data\, artificial intelligence (AI)\, learning from the finance sector and case studies applying the Trams Enterprise framework. \nJoin us on 12th March\, 9:30- 11:00. \nThis event provides Constructing Excellence National members with CPD in partnership with BRE Academy.

SUMMARY:Energy Transition Session
DESCRIPTION:Energy Transition is one of the most significant issues facing societies around the world.  The need to decarbonise and move away from fossil fuels has never been greater and the rush to deliver projects is hugely challenging from a capacity and capability perspective.  This requires us to organise differently to set projects up for success and deliver productively.  This requires genuine collaboration at a project and macro level – something that ECI and Constructing Excellence have been advocating for some time. \nJoin us for the next session on 24th March for an opportunity for young professionals in the energy transition space to share their examples of good practice and identify areas in which they’d like to see improvements. \nPlease come along armed with examples of good practice to share with the group to discuss what has worked in the past\, what are the challenges and where are the opportunities to to deliver improvements in the future. \nIn June we will be holding a face to face workshop focusing on Energy Transition to look at the options\, challenges and recommendations for the industry moving forward. We will be further developing the programme for this event in March’s session so join us to help shape this key event in our journey to deliver more effective Energy Transition projects. \nThis event provides Constructing Excellence National members with CPD in partnership with BRE Academy.
