SUMMARY:Members Forum - Organisational Resilience - Are we built on a house of cards?
DESCRIPTION:March saw the launch of two significant outputs for Constructing Excellence: The Prospectus on Insurance Backed Alliancing and Organisational Resilience – Are we built on a house of cards? We will be examining these in detail at our members forum on 16 May. \nWe will look in detail at Organisational Resilience in the UK Construction Industry\, authored by Project 5. A particularly significant given some of the current issues affecting the industry. The report’s purpose – to provide an overview of how resilient the industry is in relation to a range of internal and external factors – explores the role of organisational resilience in enabling construction companies to adapt to changing conditions. It addresses the evidence of failure\, posits why they fail\, considers the issues\, areas of risk\, and proposes how to build resilience and the benefits therein of doing so for the individual companies and the sector as a whole. We will take time to consider what Constructing Excellence and its members can do to address these issues and deliver a stronger\, more resilient industry. \nOutline agenda \n1.00 Welcome & Introductions\n1.30 Organisational Resilience – Overview\, Tim Whitehill\, Project 5\n2.20 Roundtable discussions – how can Constructing Excellence help improve organisational resilience\n3.30 Coffee\n3.45 What can Constructing Excellence do to support resilience in the UK construction industry?\n4.45 Next steps and close? \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Tackling the barriers to collaboration - ResoLex Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Registration open 17.00 | Start 17.30 | Drink Reception 19.00 \nWe are at a crossroads in industry improvement\, and an era of relative austerity and serious pressures on client budgets remains ahead of us. \nConstructing Excellence and many others argue that collaborative working has never been more important to eliminate wasteful processes and deliver value in the built environment. It is seen as key in the Government Construction Strategy 2016–2020 and in its latest Industrial Strategy with the Construction Leadership Council. Infrastructure clients in particular have become more mature in their understanding of risk\, and in making “high risk\, high value” investments they are increasingly responding with collaborative approaches\, eg alliancing\, the ISO 44001 Standard\, and the Government Construction Strategy identifies three new models of construction procurement which aim to facilitate collaboration: two-stage open book; cost-led procurement; and integrated project insurance\, the subject of a previous ResoLex Roundtable. \nYet still there remain barriers to widespread uptake\, including low awareness of the potential benefits to customer and supplier alike\, lack of standardised approaches\, poor training and development\, failure to deliver benefits in practice\, a focus on initial capital cost rather than whole-life value\, a failure to keep project teams together as supply chains\, and an obsession with lowest-price tendering. How can we address some of these barriers and ensure the sector converts words into action in the coming years? \nDon Ward is Chief Executive of Constructing Excellence\, the not-for-profit membership organisation which is part of the BRE Trust group of companies. \nPlease RSVP to Viola Yang\, Marketing Manager at ResoLex on viola.yang@resolex.com or 02073538000

SUMMARY:Digital Construction Theme Group
DESCRIPTION:The Digital Construction Theme Group previously identified a knowledge gap for robust case studies that clearly demonstrate the benefits of digital construction. Case Studies in the past have lacked rigour in applied statistical methods and suffered from poor quality of data. This meant that the derived findings were only partially meaningful and associated actions only moderately effective in improving the construction industry. The BRE Trust is now funding a Digital Construction Case Study project jointly delivered by Constructing Excellence and the BRE BIM team that seeks to establish what really drives project success to inform industry change initiatives based on evidence rather than anecdote. \nProject manager Thomas Lindner from the BRE BIM team will present the progress so far and future plans as it moves into delivery phase. This will give the Constructing Excellence Digital Construction Theme Group a chance to provide feedback as a key stakeholder in the process. \nAs always those attending the meeting can also attend the excellent thinkBIM half day conference in the afternoon. \nPlease email colm.quinn@constructingexcellence.org.uk
