SUMMARY:ECI Annual Conference - Rethinking how capital programmes are delivered
DESCRIPTION:This conference will build on the work programme of ECI during 2018\, which has addressed the challenges faced across Europe in the engineering and construction sector\, which is increasingly facing: \n\nProjects with sanctioned investment becoming unviable\,\nRising uncertainty about project outcomes related to cost\, completion dates\, start-up and plant performance and reliability\,\nFrequent disputes and major cost and delay claims that challenge resolution without arbitration or litigation\nDifficult relationships between project teams and contractors.\n\nIndustry leaders have expressed deep dissatisfaction with current ways of working and are hungry for a different approach. ECI has been working with the Construction Industry Institute in the USA on such a new model\, which embraces the opportunities afforded by digital technology to improve capital project outcomes. The conference will share thinking to date on this model as well as perspectives particularly from large owners\, users and clients of the sector. \nConfirmed speakers include Paul van Weert – Shell\, Melanie Sachar – EDF\, Frank von Willert – McKinsey & Company\, Stephen Mulva – Construction Industry Institute Texas\, John Fotherby – ECI Chair and Don Ward – ECI Chief Executive. \nAttendees at the conference will include facility sponsors\, owners and operators\, architects\, engineering firms and contractors\, manufacturers and suppliers and engineering and construction support providers as well as other related services including digital/IT\, legal\, finance and accounting. This is a great opportunity to be part of a movement that re-shapes our industry over the coming years\, as well as expanding your network and providing immediately some innovative ideas to take away that you can apply in your own organisation. \nTo book your place please click here

SUMMARY:Asset management workshop
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Bouygues UK\, and Bouygues Energy and Services as industry partners throughout last year\, a process was developed that governs data flow between all building stakeholders i.e. (Client/FM team\, Architect\, Design Consultants\, Main Contractor\, and Sub Contractors). The process is based on COBie standard and it includes sub-processes of data management using COBie for each of the RIBA stages. \nUnder the supervision of two professors from the Institute for Digital Innovation in the Built Environment\, a first focus group was held which was internal to Bouygues UK to discuss and validate the process\, in which we had useful discussion and feedback. This focus group with the CE Asset Management Theme Group aims to initiate a wider discussion with industry about the proposed process framework. \nDuring the workshop\, Mr. Ahmed Al Naggar\, a PhD candidate at UCL will present the conceptual framework of the proposed process which is already a research paper under publication at the “Journal of Facility Management”\, and then present the actual technical process that outlines data-flow in alignment with RIBA stages clarifying the role of each stakeholder; what data to be provided\, when and to what quality standards. \nAfter the presentation\, we will open a discussion about the process\, and collect feedback that will be used to refine the process\, and will be included in the second technical research paper\, of course with acknowledgment to the CE asset management group members. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Bouncing back: a new narrative for construction
DESCRIPTION:G4C passionately believes that the construction industry needs a new image. The current image has a negative impact on attracting talent and skills retention. G4C wants to drive our industry forward and demonstrate an attractive industry that is open to change. \nOur collective image is poor and this is often driven by false perception\, misinformation\, a small number of highly damaging recent incidents and industry’s failure to speak with a clear\, shared narrative to promote itself. G4C believes we must fight back\, and help facilitate the creation and delivery of a coordinated campaign to shout about the great things we do and build a new\, more engaging and positive narrative with the public. \nKey benefits: \n\nNetwork with people from across the built environment industry\, share your ideas and pitch to our panel. We want to hear from you – this is not your usual conference!\nGain a new perspective by hearing from experts in marketing\, skills\, stakeholder management\, public relations and customer service-led design.\nMeet with current and future industry thought leaders and raise your profile.\nHave fun and be creative!\nCPD\n\nProgramme \n12:00-13:00 – Lunch\n13:00-13:15 – Welcome & Overview of G4C\, Robin Lapish\, G4C\n13.15-13.45 – Keynote Sarah Beale\, CITB\n13.45-14.30 – Panel – How do we get Construction Bouncing Back? SUMMARY:Constructing Excellence Clients Forum – Client Experience on Dudley College
DESCRIPTION:Our next Clients Forum\, chaired by Phil Wilbraham\, will take place on 22nd May at the offices of Turner & Townsend.  We are delighted to be joined by Steve Johnson\, the Executive Director of Estates and Capital Projects at Dudley College. \nSteve will be giving a client perspective on the Dudley Advance II trial project of the Integrated Project Insurance Model (now called Insurance Backed Alliancing).  Steve will consider the reasons behind choosing this model\, what has worked really well\, what hasn’t worked so well and what they would do differently on future projects.  This will be followed by a group discussion on the potential opportunities and risks associated with this model of procurement. \nThe Constructing Excellence Clients Forum is an opportunity for clients to get together with other clients to discuss issues of specific relevance to our client members. \nFor more info email helpdesk@constructingexcellence.org.uk

SUMMARY:Members Forum - Organisational Resilience - Are we built on a house of cards?
DESCRIPTION:March saw the launch of two significant outputs for Constructing Excellence: The Prospectus on Insurance Backed Alliancing and Organisational Resilience – Are we built on a house of cards? We will be examining these in detail at our members forum on 16 May. \nWe will look in detail at Organisational Resilience in the UK Construction Industry\, authored by Project 5. A particularly significant given some of the current issues affecting the industry. The report’s purpose – to provide an overview of how resilient the industry is in relation to a range of internal and external factors – explores the role of organisational resilience in enabling construction companies to adapt to changing conditions. It addresses the evidence of failure\, posits why they fail\, considers the issues\, areas of risk\, and proposes how to build resilience and the benefits therein of doing so for the individual companies and the sector as a whole. We will take time to consider what Constructing Excellence and its members can do to address these issues and deliver a stronger\, more resilient industry. \nOutline agenda \n1.00 Welcome & Introductions\n1.30 Organisational Resilience – Overview\, Tim Whitehill\, Project 5\n2.20 Roundtable discussions – how can Constructing Excellence help improve organisational resilience\n3.30 Coffee\n3.45 What can Constructing Excellence do to support resilience in the UK construction industry?\n4.45 Next steps and close? \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Tackling the barriers to collaboration - ResoLex Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Registration open 17.00 | Start 17.30 | Drink Reception 19.00 \nWe are at a crossroads in industry improvement\, and an era of relative austerity and serious pressures on client budgets remains ahead of us. \nConstructing Excellence and many others argue that collaborative working has never been more important to eliminate wasteful processes and deliver value in the built environment. It is seen as key in the Government Construction Strategy 2016–2020 and in its latest Industrial Strategy with the Construction Leadership Council. Infrastructure clients in particular have become more mature in their understanding of risk\, and in making “high risk\, high value” investments they are increasingly responding with collaborative approaches\, eg alliancing\, the ISO 44001 Standard\, and the Government Construction Strategy identifies three new models of construction procurement which aim to facilitate collaboration: two-stage open book; cost-led procurement; and integrated project insurance\, the subject of a previous ResoLex Roundtable. \nYet still there remain barriers to widespread uptake\, including low awareness of the potential benefits to customer and supplier alike\, lack of standardised approaches\, poor training and development\, failure to deliver benefits in practice\, a focus on initial capital cost rather than whole-life value\, a failure to keep project teams together as supply chains\, and an obsession with lowest-price tendering. How can we address some of these barriers and ensure the sector converts words into action in the coming years? \nDon Ward is Chief Executive of Constructing Excellence\, the not-for-profit membership organisation which is part of the BRE Trust group of companies. \nPlease RSVP to Viola Yang\, Marketing Manager at ResoLex on viola.yang@resolex.com or 02073538000
