SUMMARY:Energy Transition Revolution – Powering the New Age of Project Delivery
DESCRIPTION:The scale\, complexity and speed of the energy transition challenge requires a razor-sharp focus on successful project delivery. But engineering construction still has to deliver conventional energy-related projects. What can be learnt from the past\, and what can we do differently so that energy transition and conventional energy-related projects are delivered consistently successfully for all stakeholders. This means revolutionising the way in which engineering construction delivers projects. Throughout 2023 we will be hosting online events that examine the body of knowledge and practices to achieve successful outcomes and how these can be refined\, developed and applied in the context of an unprecedented need to assure effective project delivery. \nWe aim to collaboratively explore through participants own experiences\, case studies and the latest thinking\, how technologies can enhance project delivery and how to ensure success in each stage of the project. \nWe will be building on established principles and theory and looking at the eight ACTIVE Principles (Achieving Competitiveness Through Innovation & Value Enhancement). While these principles remain relevant\, one of the purposes of this series of work will be to modernise them and bring them up to date for use in today’s world. The principles are as follows: \n\nEffective Project Concept & Definition\nEffective Project Team Management\nEffective Supply Chain Relationships\nEffective Information Management and Communication\nEffective Project Risk Management\nEffective Innovation & Continuous Improvement\nEffective Project Execution\nEffective Performance Measurement\n\n  \nWe will be kicking off on the 14th March with a session on Effective Project Concept and Definition and will be discussing some of the challenges within this area\, before exploring possible solutions.\n

SUMMARY:Effective Project Concept and Definition
DESCRIPTION:Energy Transition Revolution: Powering the New Age of Project Delivery\nEffective Project Concept and Definition\n  \nEnergy Transition is here – reports indicate political will\, technological evolution\, government investment support\, investor interest and commitment\, and project development and delivery have taken a significant leap forward. But little is said about how projects are delivered and the corresponding contracting arrangements. \nConstructing Excellence and ECI will be hosting a year long series of events to address the Energy Transition revolution and we welcome your participation! \nhttps://constructingexcellence.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Energy-Transition-final.mp4\nTo view as pdf\, click here. \n  \nDuring the first of this series\, we will explore Effective Project Concept and Definition. For this event\, our speakers will be Dario Rigaud\, Senior Construction Support Engineer of Fluor\, and Stuart Block\, AWP Manager of Fluor\, who will address the purpose and rationale with reference to the ACTIVE Principles\, asking “are these principles relevant today and\, if so\, why hasn’t industry adopted them as mainstream practice?”. We will also hear about a case study of a project where Effective Project Concept and Definition has taken place. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the focus of the meeting and share their thoughts\, ideas and experience of the matter. \n

SUMMARY:Workshop: AI in Construction
DESCRIPTION:Constructing Excellence is supporting colleagues at BRE and technology developer Glideology on an Innovate UK Feasibility Study to help improve on-site productivity through the use of real-time data feeds from cameras\, scanners\, sensors and other sources.  TRAMS-Construct collates and pre-processes camera\, sensor and meta data feeds from on-site construction into a platform\, enabling 3rd party Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) companies to develop solutions that are targeted at the needs of construction contractors managing large sites (e.g. productivity improvement\, smart contracts and dispute resolution). \nDuring the workshop we will consider user needs and use cases to help shape the solutions to align with specific needs and challenges of on-site construction.

SUMMARY:Pre-Manufactured Value– Are We Asking the Right Question?
DESCRIPTION:Pre-Manufactured Value (PMV) measures the proportion of a project value that is delivered offsite or nearsite in a drive to increase productivity and the uptake of MMC.  Its use a project KPI\, particularly in government funded projects\, is increasing the uptake of offsite solutions. \nIs this always the right answer? Is it driving the wrong behaviours?  We are joined by a brilliant panel: \n\nHelen Sturdy\, Head of Procure23\nScott Tacchi\, Head of MMC at Sir Robert McAlpine\nPhil Henry\, Market Director\, Genuit Group\nChaired by Alex Small\, Digital Platforms Lead\, Tata Steel\n\nJoin us for what promises to be a lively and interactive discussion.

SUMMARY:Kingsfield Academy: Energy Transition Leadership Course
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Transition Leadership program provides a basis from which project teams can explore and prepare for leading projects in new energy sectors. \nWith the drive towards Net Zero gathering pace\, the need to develop requisite leadership skills for this energy transition environment has never been greater. The challenges that arise out of projects with “first of its kind” (FOIK) emerging technologies\, in new markets\, and with unfamiliar contracting arrangements require changes of mindset and\, consequently\, a greater emphasis on leadership at every level of the project organisation. \nThe Energy Transition Leadership program aims to address the key areas to be considered and managed in order to execute profitable projects for contractors and present viable capital investments for owners. The course involves 4 workshops\, to view the dates\, times and leaders of each\, as well as price\, take a look at the flyer. \nSessions include:\n\nIntroduction & context of Energy Transition projects\nSystems thinking for Energy Transition projects\nContracting & Commercial Leadership for Energy Transition projects\nProject leadership for Energy Transition\n\nMore information can be found on the Kingsfield Academy website.

SUMMARY:Net Zero Construction 2023
DESCRIPTION:The IMechE warmly welcomes you to the Net Zero Construction 2023 seminar in October. \nEngineers are at the heart of the UK’s construction industry and therefore at the heart of its decarbonisation programmes. Now more than ever\, the engineering community must come together to ensure net zero construction becomes a reality. The event will also showcase the role of engineers in supporting the construction sector’s decarbonisation efforts. \nThrough innovation in areas such as ‘green steel’\, hydrogen vehicles\, battery powered plant equipment and more\, the construction industry in the UK is taking its commitment to decarbonisation seriously. Scope 3 emissions reduction is a key priority right now for many companies\, and the need to measure and report on performance is crucial. \nThe event will focus on engineering and project challenges\, technical developments\, and solutions\, with presentations designed to connect knowledge\, organisations\, and individuals to inspire new ideas and action. \nDiscount for Construction Excellence:  book at the Supporting Organisation discount on the event website or email eventenquiries@imeche.org and mention Construction Excellence.

SUMMARY:Innovation Exchange Group
DESCRIPTION:Innovation Exchange\nThe built environment and construction industry face constant external and internal challenges that require a systemic approach to innovation to turn these challenges into opportunity. Innovation is vital to driving continuous improvement and to achieve our net zero ambitions\, although it often suffers from hype with a lot of noise and a lack of implementation. \nConsultation with our members has identified a space for Constructing Excellence members to come together with innovators and researchers to explore innovation and its wider context. To give opportunity for innovators and researchers to share and explore ideas\, learn from each other and consider how the innovation can move to implementation. Led by Ben Pritchard\, Head of Innovation Management at Invennt\, the Innovation Exhange group will meet regularly\, either online or through visits to inspiring innovative places and organisations\, to jointly explore how to move from innovation to mainstream. \nOn Wednesday 8th November\, we’re kicking off with an online session led by the chair\, Ben Pritchard\, talking about the Innovation Management Process\, which provides a framework for organisations to give their innovation purpose and direction. Invennt’s innovation management system provides this and has allowed them to create new services\, new products and roll out a number of productivity improvements. This culminated in Invennt becoming the first SME in the construction industry to achieve the BSI kitemark for Innovation management.
