Constructing Excellence and BIM

At Constructing Excellence, we love BIM because you can’t use BIM effectively without adopting integrated working. At Constructing Excellence we have 12 years’ worth of evidence that shows that integrated working produces a better end result than traditional, sequential design-bid-build procurement, too often procured using lowest price.

In late 2009 the membership of Constructing Excellence identified five key strategic issues that would bring value to member companies and the wider industry. Consequently BIM became one of the five Theme groups formed to review strategy. These are:

  • Nuclear
  • Lean
  • Asset Management
  • Economy
  • Building Information Modelling (BIM)

At its heart Constructing Excellence is an organisation that promotes Collaborative Working and Integration (hyperlink to Collaborative Working Champions) which has included initiatives such as theAvanti project in 2001-5, which became the basis of the BIM British Standard BS1192. The Constructing Excellence BIM theme group is composed of a wide cross section of member organisations including practitioners, academics and specialists and continues to deliver value for our members and the industry by embracing BIM as a progressive and radical paradigm shift in the way industry actors collaborate and operate, and is based on the Constructing Excellence core strengths of:

  • being respected by and still working with government on a number of its policies
  • being deeply engaged with industry, especially with those that are progressive and embrace innovation
  • having strong client networks
  • working closely with key universities
  • our values of collaborative working, integration, pan-industry, inter-disciplinary

with BIM focused objectives of:

  • Create value for national members and the CE movement by helping those who want to progress
  • Raise awareness and take-up of good practice in BIM across the industry
  • Facilitate successful implementation of the government BIM strategy
  • Ensure that progress is sustained despite any future reduction in government commitment
  • Pave the way for sustainable embedding of BIM (Level 3) esp for early adopters within 3-5 years.

The Group’s activities include:

  • A series of case studies that seek to support and motivate the transition to BIM
  • representation on the BIM Task Group
