Kier Construction

Constructing Excellence

In 2021, Kier undertook a company-wide diversity & inclusion (D&I) audit, including an all-employee survey, to inform the direction of our D&I strategy. Using feedback from the audit, they created a D&I roadmap, outlining their plans for the next five years. Since then, they have introduced the Expect Respect campaign, designed to educate employees on the importance of inclusive language and communicating our zero-tolerance approach to bullying and harassment.

The senior leaders understand that D&I is a business imperative as well as the right thing to do and are committed to delivering the D&I agenda. Recognising the need to upskill their leadership population, their top 200 leaders have undergone D&I training, including a module on Leading in an inclusive world, delivered by D&I experts INvolve.

They have enhanced our family friendly policies and introduced the industry’s first pregnancy loss policy, alongside menopause guidance aimed at supporting employees and facilitating conversations in the workplace, with a newly established menopause action group driving this agenda.

They have also become an accredited Real Living Wage employer, implementing the RLW for direct employees, with a clear implementation plan for indirect employees.

Three Winning Facts:
  1. In addition to publishing our D&I Roadmap, we’ve introduced four new employee networks; the umbrella Kier Inclusion Network, the Gender Inclusion Network, the Racial Inclusion Network and the Ability Network, to sit along-side our already established LGBT+ and Allies Network. Each of our five employee networks acts as a safe space for employees to share their experiences and drive D&I at Kier.
  2. We launched our Expect Respect campaign, promoting our ‘respect basics’, upskilling our leadership population with D&I training to drive delivery of our EDI action plan. Our HR director, Helen Redfern, was featured as one of 100 senior leaders in INvolve’s global HERoes 2021 Executive Role. Model Lists, the only person from the construction industry to be featured
  3. We’ve enhanced our family-friendly policies and introduced the industry’s first pregnancy loss policy, alongside menopause guidance and accommodations.
