Over 100 members and other industry representatives joined MPs and Lords at the Constructing Excellence Annual Reception on December 11th. This was hosted for the final time by Gerry Sutcliffe, MP, who stands down at the next Election after representing Bradford South since 1994.
Speaking at the event, Lord Deighton, Commercial Secretary to the Treasury, confirmed that infrastructure has got to the top of the Political agenda as a primary driver of economic recovery and sustainability. He thanked the industry for working with the Government to shape the national infrastructure plan, confirmed his confidence in the future pipeline, and felt good progress has been made to professionalise the government demand for construction. The need was now for the industry to rise to the challenge of delivering projects efficiently, and if he left the industry with one challenge, it was the need to commit based on the visible forward demand to investing in the recruitment, training and development of enough people with the necessary skill sets to deliver the programme.
